Friday, December 22, 2006, a camera detached from astronaut Williams duringa seven-hour spacewalk. Williams, a member of the space shuttle Discovery crew, was in the process of trying to free a stuck solar array on the international space station. A button designed to lock the camera in place may have failed, resulting in the camera’s loss. It would have been impossible for Williams to have recovered it unless performing an untethered EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity) which is very dangerous and rarely authorized. The camera drifted away into space at 27,720 kilometers per hour.
